With strong supports from the Ministry of Education and Government of Zhejiang Province, and under the cooperation between Zhejiang University and the City of Haining, the International Campus, Zhejiang University has been officially founded. This is an important move for ZJU as it strives to follow the national strategy “Strengthening the Country through Talents” and the strategy aiming to promote innovation-driven development. It is also essential for ZJU to enhance its international influence and accelerate its efforts towards building a world-class university.
Since the plan for building the International Campus was proposed in early 2013, it has drawn much attention from home and abroad. ZJU has signed cooperative agreements with Imperial College London, University of Edinburgh, and University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. ZJU-Imperial Joint Lab for Applied Data Science was founded in March 2015. Institute of China Studies was established in November, 2014. Following the approval by the Ministry of Education to establish the International Campus in 2015, on February 1, 2016, the requests to establish ZJU-UoE Institute and ZJU-UIUC Institute were also approved by the Ministry of Education. The construction of the International Campus went on smoothly, as the first phase of the project is expected to be put into use in June 2016. Moreover, ZJU is cooperating with the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and Peking University to establish a China-US business school, and with Imperial College London to establish a cooperative education base.
The International Campus, based in Haining, supported by ZJU, and following international standards, positions itself as a top national base for the practice of Chinese-foreign cooperatively-run education and ZJU’s strategic education base. It will draw on the strengths from eastern and western educational models, serving ZJU’s development towards a world-class university and the social, economic and cultural development of Haining, Zhejiang Province, China and the world.
