Biomedical Sciences

1. Educational Objectives

By introducing and integrating the advanced educational resources of Zhejiang University and the University of Edinburgh, we will build a new type of biomedical education base that focuses on fostering in students an integrated knowledge of the liberal arts, biology, and the medical  sciences, and endowing them with capacities for scientific and technological innovation and global collaboration, as well as with the capacity to lead and realize their ambitions for a better society.

From the professional aspect, efforts will be made to consolidate students’ fundamental as well cross-disciplinary knowledge, to strengthen their ability to carry out research, and to broaden their minds. Besides, emphasis will be put on training students in aspects of the humanities and social sciences, thus enhancing both their emotional intelligence quotient and their intelligence quotient. Personal guidance for student development and planning the future will also be provided.

Based on the potential and career aspirations of individual students, “personalized” and “diversified” routes of pre-career education will be offered in order to prepare them to become talented researchers and teachers in biomedical sciences, or specialists in innovation and management in the healthcare and biomedical sciences industries. We anticipate that our students will work in the academic, industrial, and administrative sectors after graduation.

2. Basic Profiles of Graduates

Abiding by the principles of running the joint institute, by completing this program, our graduates are expected to meet the following criteria with regard to attitude, knowledge, and skills:

Attitude:

(1) Students are expected to have a scientific world-view, a rational philosophy, and a well-developed sense of value. They should be ambitious and willing to make contributions to the development of the biomedical sciences;

(2) Students should hold to the principle of lifelong learning and fully understand the importance of continuous self-improvement;

(3) Students should learn to respect others, especially in terms of their particular beliefs, and to understand their humanity and cultural values;

(4) Students should learn to have a rigorous and realistic attitude towards scientific research, be creative and critical, and be devoted to making contributions to the generation of new knowledge and skills;

(5) Students are required to respect their peers and understand the importance of teamwork, international cooperation, and competition;

(6) Students should learn how to carry out scientific research within the law and how to protect their own rights by legal means.

Knowledge:

(1) Students are required to master basic knowledge and scientific methods such as mathematics, physics, chemistry, behavioral sciences, and social sciences;

(2) Students should understand the important ideas, research frontiers, and research methods of the biological sciences;

(3) Students are encouraged to understand important concepts, research frontiers and research methods of medical sciences;

(4) Students should know the normal structure and function of the human body at the different stages of life;

(5) Students are required to understand the causes of common diseases that occur at the different stages of life, to realize the influence of the environment, society, and mental states on the origin and development of diseases, to appreciate the importance of preventing diseases, and to understand the pathogenesis, the methods of prevention and diagnosis, the current ability to cure and its main problems and flaws, and the current research findings and their deficiencies with regard to common diseases.

Skills:

(1) To become fully capable of doing experiments in the biomedical sciences;

(2) To develop scientific thinking, analysis, and description to a high level;

(3) To be able to design and perform rigorous experiments;

(4) To know how to manage projects efficiently and effectively;

(5) To learn how to teach and present knowledge of the biomedical sciences in a stimulating way;

(6) To develop effective communication with team members, colleagues, and others;

(7) To learn how to study topics in the biomedical sciences, and acquire new knowledge and relevant information, by independently using resources from the internet and libraries and integrating them with current research practice;

(8) To have the ability to communicate, write, and speak in English as well as becoming proficient in reading program-related literature;

(9) To learn how to study independently and become a lifelong learner.
