Nominees for the People of Distinction | YU Qian: To be a Torch to Warm the Heart and Light the Future

YU Qian, ZJUI Student Tutor. Since joining iZJU in Jul. 2019, she devotes herself to talent development and cultivation with sincerity and responsibility. With heart, she aspires to be a guiding light in student thought. She organized and guided more than 1000 students to do social practice. With love, she strives to be a peer in students growth. Accompanying by students in the state of “always ready,” and solving the risks in immediate action, walking together through the deepest night, talking together through the longest communication, she has always kept the initial heart and enthusiasm when she first became a tutor. With responsibility, she has been trying her best to be a pioneer of student success. Adopting the idea of “one person, one policy, classified guidance,” she tracked students' development and placement progress with personalised growth programmes and work accounts, always keeps every student into heart, and lays solid foundation for students graduation and career development.

To be a ideological guide with firm ideals and convictions

Yu Qian always focuses on cultivating students' sense of homeland sentiment and helping them establish worldview and values. She made full use of the spirit of Chu Kochen, the prestigious president of Zhejiang University, who devoted all his energy to the construction and development of the university, into her education practice. She has served for two consecutive years as a lecturer for the Zhejiang University College Students' Ideals and Beliefs Presentation Group, participating in the development of the "Chu Spirit" Lecture Group and the "Qi Zhen Class," which form the integrated educational system of Principal Chu's spirit. She founded the Chinese-English bilingual tour guide team of Nanhu Revolutionary Memorial Hall.

She leads by example. She explores and establishes the "seed to harvest" labor education brand, which has been carried out for 7 sessions, with nearly 2000 faculty, staff and students experiencing the joy of sowing, planting, and harvesting on campus. She guides students to understand the national conditions, recognize society, and solve problems from social practice, giving back to society with their knowledge and skills. She has organized and guided students in various social practice activities such as "Chinese Spirit Visit" "Rural Revitalization," and "Teaching and Research" for five consecutive years, covering more than 1000 students. She helps students gain happiness and growth from volunteer services. From campus open-day, to teacher-student sports meet, her organized volunteer teams are present at all kinds of activities on campus. She organized students from the campus to serve for the volunteering of Hangzhou Asian Games, which were affirmed by Zhejiang University. She also cherishes the opportunities to carry out volunteer services with students, which gives her more time to grow together with student.

To be a growth peer with passionate and warm

Adhering to the life creed of “overcoming difficulties and working actively,” she tackled all the difficulties and challenges with the attitude of “always keeping students in her heart” and “always being ready.” She strives to be a friend to her students, always patiently accompanying and listening to the students' worries and confusions. She is deeply committed to the “Three-Dimensional Education” philosophy, actively collaborating with faculty members, academic affairs staffs, class mentors, parents and peers to assist students in resolving practical issues. She actively explores the power of peers, from study groups to one-on-one pairings to support groups, continuously focusing on the actual needs of students and adjusting the forms in which peer power plays a role in academic guidance, providing more targeted assistance to help students improve their academic issues. She patiently listens to and counsels parents, striving to help students gain more effective support.

She treats all students with the utmost enthusiasm. Even during her short-term visiting abroad, she tries to find any spare time to visit students who are exchanging there. She cares about the entire growth process of her students, actively contacting and visiting alumni, and with unwavering enthusiasm, helps alumni solve various matters after leaving school.

To be a dream chaser with strong goals and positive actions

Taking student success as her very important responsibility, she promoted the Graduate Project and tried to help students set up career awareness as early as possible with the idea of “one person, one policy, classified guidance”. She helped students clarify their intention and position, and tracked their comprehensive capability through questionnaires and conversations, she took effects to make personalized growth programs and work accounts. To provide more useful practical experience, she invited alumni to write the Leap Manual, and organized many sharing sessions on further study, work experience, resume making and job interview. All she wants to do is helping students be more competitive in their future development.

After years of hard work, she is gradually being encouraged and recognized. She was awarded the Ideological and Political Education and Management Scholarship and Outstanding Instructor of Zhejiang University. The teams guided by her were awarded the Top Ten Nominee Award, the Outstanding Team Award, the Outstanding Organization Award for Social Practice and Outstanding Volunteer Unit in Haining City for many times.

Over the past five years, she has patiently accompanied more than 400 students. She always puts the service of students’ growth and success first, she appreciates every student, she also encourages them to shine in their respective fields and strive to be responsible and outstanding youth in the new era.
