Recently, the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) announced the results of Pilot Group Program of the Research Fund for International Senior Scientists. The project of "Intelligent Management System for Shared Passenger and Freight Transportation in Sustainable Smart Cities," led by Academician Lee Der-Horng, Dean of ZJUI, with Prof. Yang Yi, Prof. Wang Hongwei, Prof. Chen Xiqun, Assist Prof. Simon Hu, and Assist Prof. Wang Gao’ang, Dr. Zhu Zheng of Zhejiang University, Prof. Sun Huijun of Beijing Jiaotong University, Prof. Jin Jiangang from Shanghai Jiao Tong University as core group members, has been successfully approved.

The Pilot Group Program of the Research Fund for International Senior Scientists set up by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) is currently the highest-level research project aimed at foreign researchers in the funding system of the National Natural Science Foundation of China. It aims to support foreign scientists with internationally recognized academic achievements and influence, leading research groups in the forefront of basic science to carry out research work. In 2023, the National Natural Science Foundation of China plans to support only 12 pilot projects for International Senior Scientists Research Group Project in 17 fields across the country. This is the first time that International Campus,Zhejiang University has been approved for this type of project, and it is an important breakthrough in the field of basic research and international scientific and technological cooperation of Zhejiang university.

Academician Lee Der-Horng innovatively proposed an Intelligent Management System for Shared Passenger and Freight Transportation in Sustainable Smart Cities, focusing on intelligent logistics and digital transformation in information system management. By collecting, analyzing, and integrating various types of public transportation data, an efficient, intelligent, and cutting-edge information management system is constructed to achieve accurate prediction of passenger and freight supply and demand, optimal resource allocation, and capacity sharing. With the goal of improving the reliability, functionality, and sustainability of urban transportation and logistics information systems, this study reveals the travel behavior mechanism and supply and demand evolution law under the public transportation capacity sharing mode from the perspective of data-model dual driven. It establishes a dynamic collaborative optimization theory and method for passenger and freight transportation capacity of sustainable public transportation systems under digital transformation and constructs an intelligent scheduling model for passenger and freight transportation capacity of public transportation systems.

In response to the special circumstances of urban transportation incidents, the project improves the integrated passenger and freight information system, sets up resilience and emergency response mechanisms for urban public transportation, and ensures the rapid recovery of transportation capacity in special circumstances. The research results of this project will construct a complete closed-loop research system that combines a data-model dual driven urban public transportation system supply and demand balance model, urban public transportation system management and system optimization, research on shared intelligent decision-making in urban public transportation systems, verification of emergency and resilience applications in urban public transportation systems, and development of integrated passenger and freight information systems, which will have significant socio-economic benefits and great industrial technology application prospects.

In recent years, ZJUI has fully implemented the requirements of scientific research reform, strengthened the construction of scientific and technological talent teams, continuously promoted international scientific and technological cooperation and exchange, and the construction of international scientific and technological research teams. In terms of international scientific and technological cooperation, there have been frequent reports of success. The approval of the pilot project is of great significance for improving our institute's basic research level and enhancing international academic cooperation. This is also another major breakthrough for our institute after the successful approval of the Zhejiang Provincial Engineering Research Center for Multimodal Transport Logistics Large Models, which is the first pilot logistics large model research center established nationwide.
