On September 20th, an English speech to 2017 freshmen was delivered by Professor Song Yonghua, Executive Vice President and Dean of International Campus, ZJU at the lecture hall of Teaching Building North A. Professor He Lianzhen, Executive Vice Dean of International Campus, Professor K.C. Ting, Vice Dean of International Campus, Mr. Zhuge Yang, Vice Secretary of Party Working Committee, Secretary of Commission for Discipline Inspection, and Director of Administration Office, International Campus, Chinese and foreign newly-recruited faculty and staff, as well as Chinese and international freshmen attended the event, with Professor Wang Yufen, Member of Party Working Committee and Director of Office of Student Affairs, International Campus as the host.
The speech, starting with the theme of “the mission of research university: cultivating future leaders”, was divided into three sessions. First, Professor Song illustrated the evolution of international higher education, pointing out that the opportunities and challenges faced by modern universities in the global context of climate change and financial crisis. He emphasised on the significance of innovation under the global technical challenges, putting forward that the mission of an university lies in the adaption to the world changes. Then, he further introduced the history of Chinese institution of higher education, and described its past glories and hardships. Finally, Professor Song laid special emphasis on the meaning of the establishment of International Campus， making clear the mission and goal of the Campus, and expressing the sincere hope and expectations towards faculty, staff and students.
