An English Lecture on the Spirit of the 20th National Congress of the CPC Held at International Campus

On the evening of December 15, an English lecture on the spirit of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC) was held at the International Campus. Entitled “China’s Modernization and Rule of Law”, this thematic lecture was offered by Prof. ZHAO Jun, Vice Dean of Guanghua Law School, Zhejiang University, and chaired by Assistant Prof. ZHOU Wenyu, MCS Academic Director of ZIBS. QU Lijuan, Executive Deputy Secretary of the Communist Party Committee and Vice Dean of the International Campus, and QU Haidong, Member of the Communist Party Committee of the International Campus and Vice Dean of ZJU International Business School (ZIBS) were present at the lecture. More than 120 faculty, staff members and students of the International Campus attended the lecture online and nearly half of the attendees were international students around the world.

Prof. ZHAO Jun briefed the audience on the main contents of the report of the 20th National Congress of the CPC by emphasizing keywords, including “China’s modernization”, “high-quality development”, “high-level opening-up”, “eco-civilization construction”, and “Party building”. Through a series of pictures and data, he vividly depicted the practices and outcomes of the Party, the State in eco-civilization construction and the high-quality development of the “Belt and Road Initiative”.
Prof. ZHAO Jun elaborated on “China’s modernization” and “Rule of Law”, which were repeatedly mentioned in the report of the 20th National Congress of the CPC. From the concepts to connotations, he explained in detail that the Party’s deployment to adhere is to the rule of law in an all-round manner, and advance the construction of rule of law in China, and emphasized that XI Jinping’s idea on the rule of law is the overarching guideline for the law-based governance on all fronts. Making coordinated efforts to advance the domestic rule of law and foreign-related rule of law is integral to the rule of law on all fronts. Having a robust foreign-related rule of law system is an important foundation to safeguard national sovereignty, security and development interests. It is also an inevitable requirement for safeguarding world peace and promoting common development.
Prof. ZHAO Jun emphasized the need to advance the foreign-related rule of law system and capacity building through systematic thinking and overall planning, to explore and uphold fundamental principles and to break new ground actively promote the development of global governance system towards a more justified and rational direction. In addition, to contribute Chinese wisdom, Chinese solutions, and Chinese strength to create new forms of human civilization and build a community of shared future for mankind. 
At the end of the lecture, Prof. ZHAO Jun, had once again highlighted the importance of the “Rule of Law”. He pointed out that the rule of law in an all-round manner is a profound revolution in national governance and the key to modernize the country’s governance system and capacity.

In the Q&A session, Prof. ZHAO Jun answered the questions raised by the audience and expressed for more in-depth exchanges with faculty, staff and students of the International Campus in the future. 
The faculty, staff and students all agreed that they had benefited and gained a more comprehensive understanding of China’s modernization and rule of law under the leadership of the CPC from this lecture 
Prof. ZHAO Jun’s research areas mainly include international economic law, international commercial law, and comparative law. In December 2017, he was invited by the International Campus to offer the international students a lecture on the spirit of the 19th National Congress of the CPC, to help them get a true, multi-dimensional and panoramic view of China.
