On the evening of September 20th, a ceremony was held to appoint Prof. YAN Jianhua as the Master of Weixue College, one of the three Residential Colleges at Zhejiang University International Campus. Prof. FU Qiang, Vice Chairman of the Zhejiang University Council, presented Prof. YAN with his letter of appointment. Prof. LI Hanying, Dean of the International Campus, delivered a speech. The ceremony was co-hosted by QU Lijuan, Vice Dean of International Campus, and Mohamed Abdelsamie, an Egyptian student from the Master of Finance program class of 2023.
Professor YAN Jianhua, who is also a Changjiang Scholar and Vice Chairman of the Development Committee of Zhejiang University, gave a special lecture entitled "Seeking Truth and Innovation, Cultivating Leaders with a Sense of National Identity and a Global Vision." He used the stories of some leading scientists to inspire students to inherit Zhejiang University's traditions and continue seeking truth and innovation. Professor YAN expressed four hopes for the students: to pursue excellence and lofty life ideals; to overcome difficulties and serve the major needs of the country; to embrace the broad vision of the new era; to stand high and think deeply; and to uphold the spirit of seeking truth, embracing challenges, and constantly innovating. He encouraged the students, stating that "Weixue" symbolizes the exploration of new knowledge in the boundless sea of learning, the pursuit of dreams in the vast world. He visualized for the students the goal of making the world a better place by tapping into their potential for imagination, action, leadership, and reform and innovation in Weixue College.
After the lecture, the student body warmly welcomed Professor Yan and engaged in enthusiastic discussion.
Members of the Weixue College staff then met with the students and expressed their sincere wishes to facilitate their learning and growth.
More than 500 people attended the event, including the leadership team of the International Campus, the Master’s assistants, heads of various teaching units and departments, the Weixue College staff, and students from different residential colleges.
