Prosperous Years Ahead with the Shared Joy Gifted to All

2023-12-24

On December 22nd, the winter solstice, the "Ring in a Harmonious and Fruitful New Year" fishing activity was held on International Campus to bid farewell to the past and welcome the new year.

The Fishing Activity

"1, 2, 3, pull...!" More than 20 teachers and students with the help of the fishing staff pulled a 200-meter-long fishing net, and hundreds of fish were galloping in the lake. Although the temperature is low, the scene is in full swing.

As the fishing net gradually arrives at the shore, the fish splashed out of the lake, with water splashing all over the place. Faculty, staff, students, and citizens on the shore took out their cameras to record the joyful harvest moment. The appearance of the "King of Fishes" made the scene extremely exciting!!

Asad, a faculty who signed up to participate in this fishing activity said: "This is my first time experiencing fishing in China. It is very interesting. I hope to have more opportunities to participate in such traditional activities."

Mr. CHU, a Haining citizen who brought his family members to participate in the event, said: "I am very yearning of Zhejiang University and I am very happy to participate in this event. I am also very grateful to International Campus for the invitation."

In this activity, 240 fish was caught, totalling about 2,000 kilograms, including silver carp, grass carp, herring, crucian carp, etc. The "King of Fishes" weighs 35 kilograms and is 65 centimetres long.

A Fish and Lamb Feast

The campus used the freshly harvested fish to cook a feast for all the teachers and students, to comfort them after a year of busyness and growth.

Since ancient times, fish and lamb were considered “fresh” when served together. This concept is taken from the Chinese character “鲜”, which is the combination of both Chinese characters “鱼”-fish and “羊”-lamb. The campus provided roasted whole lamb, bringing the ultimate delicious enjoyment.

People also took photos with the mascot "Lianlian". In this winter solstice, there is smile, joy, warmth, and hope. We hope the coming year goes well, and we wish all of you a happy New Year!
