The International Campus held its 11th High Table Dinner in the Multimedia Hall on the evening of September 29th. The host of the event was YING Yibin, Master of Guantong College, who extended a warm welcome and gave an introduction to the keynote speaker, Professor LIN Jianhua, recalling his contributions to the development of the International Campus while serving as President of Zhejiang University. FU Qiang, Vice President of Zhejiang University, presented LIN Jianhua with a commemorative album.
LIN Jianhua shared his insights on the thematic speech, "The purpose of education is to unlock one's inner potential and foster personal growth." He analyzed the characteristics of education, such as uncertainty, irreversibility, anonymity, innovation, and continuity. He explained that although explicit knowledge can be articulated and shared through different media, it is not easily retained in long-term memory. Tacit knowledge, on the other hand, tends to be internalized. The aim of education is therefore to transform explicit knowledge into tacit knowledge through practical experience. He encouraged the students to explore the tacit knowledge embedded and preserved within the excellent research institutions and universities around the world.
LIN also pointed out that, although the advent of Artificial Intelligence has ushered in an era of open knowledge, it is still crucial to grasp and treasure the unique knowledge and abilities of human beings. Consequently, higher education will encourage the development of strong values, humanistic sentiment, personal knowledge, and academic ability among students, as well as opening up "disciplinary boundaries, learning boundaries, and university boundaries."
In his own remarks, the host, YING Yibin, emphasized that the Residential Colleges at International Campus serve as more than just living spaces for students, which also provide a platform for students' growth and development, aiming to cultivate students with homeland sentiments, international vision, global competitiveness, and world responsibility. YING also encouraged the students to become excellent people in the human sense, that someone with clear thinking and insight into the world.
Derryn Schoenrock, a student who hosted the event, also shared his thoughts, "I am very grateful to be the master of ceremonies and a participant in this wonderful event. I would love to attend a second time." XU Binxing, from Guantong College, also expressed his enjoyment of the event and relished the opportunity to make new friends and acquire new knowledge. ZHENG Dehui, a new graduate student, said that Prof. LIN's speech was not only a transmission of knowledge, but also a kind of inner renewal.
