Founded in 1583, the University of Edinburgh is the sixth-oldest university in the United Kingdom and the cradle of modern medicine as well as a world-renowned centre for medical education. Medical educators trained at its medical school established the medical schools of five Ivy League universities in the United States. In 2016, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, Zhejiang University and the University of Edinburgh jointly established the Zhejiang University–University of Edinburgh Joint Institute (ZJE) as a non-independent legal-person Chinese-foreign cooperative education institution.
