Recently, a research team organized by ZJUI Distinguished Professor Yan Xiao has been approved for a funding of 7.73 million Yuan from the Ministry of Science and Technology. The project is a part of the “Research on Ecological Structure System for Prefabricated Residential Buildings in Villages and Towns” multi-university grand challenge project led by Prof. Chen Zhihua of the Tianjin University, under the “Technological Innovation of Green Livable Villages and Towns” of the National Key Research and Development Plan in 2019. The research team led by Prof. Xiao and Prof. Demartino is in charge of developing “Key Technology of Cost-effective Prefabricated and Hybrid Ecological Bamboo Structural Systems” and “Intelligent Construction Technology of Cost-effective Bamboo Structures”. The research will challenge the implementation of the ecological bamboo into modern prefabrication and intelligent manufacture technologies to promote the application of bio-based materials in residential building construction. The goal is to contribute to the improvement of living environment and the protection of natural beauty in China’s rural areas.

Under the international trend of sustainable and green development, Prof. Xiao initiated the research efforts on bamboo and bio-based materials in 2005, and developed the award winning technology of GluBam, which combined the advanced modern wood structure development in industrialized countries such as Europe, North America and Japan with the rich bamboo forest resources in China. The invention of Glubam was awarded the Best of What’s New in 2008 by the Popular Science magazine. Prof. Xiao has received numerous research grants including the National Key Program and General Programs from National Natural Science Foundation of China, the Blue Moon Foundation, etc. Prof. Xiao has published more than 50 influential academic papers in high-level academic journals, both domestically and internationally. His research team has developed several modern bamboo structure systems including Light and Heavy Bamboo Frame Building, Steel-Bamboo and Concrete-Bamboo Composite Systems, Large-span Bamboo Roof Truss Systems, Bamboo Structure Bridge System, Prefabricated Bamboo Houses, and constructed many demonstration buildings and bridges in China and Africa. In 2008, his team went to Sichuan Province and built many Wenchuan earthquake relief classrooms and houses. Through years of efforts, the modern engineered bamboo structure originated in China has become an international research trend followed by researchers worldwide. Meanwhile, Prof. Xiao has trained more than 40 postdocs, doctors and masters who are active worldwide at universities and professional industry.
