Conversation on Foreign Language Teaching with Chinese Characteristics in the New Era

From October 7th to 8th, the 2nd High-end Symposium on Foreign Language Education with Chinese Characteristics unfolded on International Campus. Esteemed experts and scholars from across the nation engaged in profound dialogues, focusing on the "New Orientation of Foreign Language Education in the Era of Artificial Intelligence." The forum was jointly organized by the Editorial Board of Foreign Language Teaching and Research at Beijing Foreign Studies University, the China Foreign Language Education Research Center, and Zhejiang University, with the College of Foreign Languages at Zhejiang University serving as the host.

Professor HE Lianzhen, Vice President of Zhejiang University, and Professor WANG Kefei, Editor-in-Chief of Foreign Language Teaching and Research, graced the opening ceremony with their presence and delivered insightful speeches. Successive speeches were given by Professor WANG Wenbin and Professor YU Hongliang, followed by engaging discussions with Professor XU Jun and Professor YANG Jincai.

During her opening speech, Professor HE expressed sincere gratitude to the experts who have long supported ZJU’s foreign languages disciplines. She provided an overview of the International Campus's development, highlighting its role as a strategic educational base supporting the country's high-level education outreach, regional innovation-driven development strategy, and the university's pursuit of becoming a world-class institution with Chinese characteristics. Emphasizing the International Campus's unique advantage in shaping the future-oriented global education and rich experience in foreign language teaching, she encouraged the experts to spark intellectual synergies, anticipating fruitful outcomes from the symposium.

Professor WANG Kefei, representing the editorial board of the Foreign Language Teaching and Research and the China Foreign Language Education Research Center, expressed sincere gratitude to the conference organizers and commended the educational attainments of International Campus. He noted the significant theoretical and practical implications of the conference's theme, "New Orientation of Foreign Language Education in the Era of Artificial Intelligence." He encouraged participating experts to delve into the shifts in foreign language education within the context of the AI era, fostering in-depth discussions to advance the construction of a robust socialist education system with distinct Chinese characteristics.

During the symposium, experts concentrated on key topics such as the new landscape of foreign language education in the era of artificial intelligence, innovative teaching methods, virtual instruction, educational assessment, the cultivation of creative talents, teaching material reforms, and the transformation and development of disciplines.

Established in 2018, the Symposium on Foreign Language Education with Chinese Characteristics in the New Era aims to construct a theoretical, disciplinary, and discourse system for foreign language education guided by Xi Jinping's thought of socialism with Chinese characteristics in the new era. The goal is to contribute Chinese wisdom and programs to the global theoretical and academic development of educational disciplines.
